As Pet Parents we can deal with our fair share of poop during our pet’s lifetime, but have you ever stopped to wonder is my pet’s poop normal? Each pet’s poop is completely individual to them and can be a pretty good indicator of your pet’s health, so it is important to find out what is normal for your pet and their routine and then if anything changes you can seek advice from your vet.
What colour should my pet’s poop be?
The answer …… chocolate brown, or various shades of it. However if your pet’s food contains colouring’s these may come through into their poop so keep this in mind. Below are a few various colours that can be seen and potential issues this may relate to
Black/Dark Brown – maybe a sign of blood in the poo, potential causes include internal bleeding and infections.
Red (or streaked with red) – could be colitus, anal gland infection, rectal injury or worse.
Pink or Purple – if it looks like jam then get your pet to the vet.
Grey or Greasy looking – fatty or slimy shows an inability to break down fats.
White specks – Worms could be present, make sure you’re up to date with worming treatment.
Yellow – food intolerance sign.
Orange – food is being processed too fast for bile to make it look ‘normal’.
Green – most likely your pet has ate too much grass, but could indicate parasites or poisons.
